You may have felt inclined to turn your heater on this year. After all, even southwest Florida has its cold fronts, and this week has been colder than most! However, if you went to warm up your home only to discover you are having heating system problems, there’s no need to panic. You can troubleshoot the issue with Bruno Air’s heating system tips!
Ways to Troubleshoot Heating System Problems
Like with all troubleshooting methods, it’s best to start with the basics. Some of the most common heating system problems are also the most minor. In fact, you may be able to fix the problem without ever picking up the phone.
First, check your thermostat settings. This will feel like common sense, but sometimes the obvious details are the most overlooked, so it never hurts to double-check. Is the heat on? Is your fan set to automatic? If so, the heater will only kick on if it is needed to reach the temperature you’ve specified as your preference. If that specified degree is not higher than the current room temperature, your heater will not kick on. If this is the case and you want to warm things up, turn your specified temperature up five degrees.
Be sure to check the furnace filter as well to make sure it isn’t clogged with dust and dirt. If the filter is dirty, replace it. Like your AC filters, these should be maintained to ensure proper airflow.
If your furnace doesn’t start at all, check the circuit breaker box to make sure the furnace hasn’t tripped. If it has, reset it. If your fan doesn’t switch on, your issue may lie in your motor, capacitor, or control board, which would require a professional technician diagnose and repair.
If you have a gas-fired furnace, your eyes should go straight to the pilot light. Is it lit? If not, or if it switches off soon after it’s lit, then make sure you don’t have an issue with any of your other gas appliances. If it’s just the furnace, the issue could be a number of issues ranging from your fuel line to a dirty sensor. Again, this is when you need to call in a professional.
